The Social Media Truth: Do Not Compare
Updated: May 12, 2021
Nowadays, people do not have to communicate constantly to know where they are or what they are up to. Friends, family, or even strangers can easily look you up at any social media platform you are on just to see how you are doing these days. The same is true for almost all of us, in just a click of a button, we can search for someone and know what’s going on with their lives.
That’s how social media works! People update them every time. May it be attending a birthday party, a wedding, going on a vacation, eating something delicious, flaunting a brand new dress, bag, gadgets, flexing a new car, basically anything under the sun.

Everyone who sees these posts take them differently. Some will be inspired to work harder to achieve those things. Some will question why they can’t have those too. Some will get envious that they don’t have them. And some will get depressed thinking that life is unfair.
Let’s be clear about posting on social media. Most people posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media platforms, all the good things they have. People tend to show off what they have or where they are so other people think that they are happy, contented, and live the ideal life. Not all but most people on social media have this kind of thinking, intentional or unintentional. Have you seen anyone posting on social media bragging about wearing worn-out clothes? Having low grades at school? Parents are getting divorced? Having to take a loan to pay for their house or car? NONE! You won’t find anyone posting these kinds of things on social media because it doesn’t look pleasing. Because again, Social media has become a way of life for many people to show off and brag about all the good things that they have.
If you’re someone who’s struggling in life right now, and looking at the social media accounts of different people especially your friends and relatives, make you second guess your capabilities and achievements, please remember that everyone is struggling and behind those happy and beautiful pictures being posted on their social media accounts are their battles we know nothing about.
So please, do not compare yourself based on what you see on other people’s social media. Learn to work on your skills and be determined to succeed. Compete with yourself and not with anybody else. Always strive to be a better version of yourself. Because at the end of the day, it’s only you, and you alone who can lift yourself towards your dream.
